Shattered by the reality of her betrothal, Ann dragged her leaden feet onto the training field with her hands clasped together to avoid Lilly noticing her trembling fingers. The thought of marrying Sir Bruin weighed heavy on her shoulders like a sentence of death. She stared across the sunlit vista. Knights covered the ground in a hive of activity. The men practiced their skills with swords or axes. Others rode spirited horses purposely toward the quintain, holding their lances high. The atmosphere held a friendly yet competitive nature with many squires yelling words of encouragement to their masters. The aroma of horse and the musky scent of men’s sweat hung heavy in the damp air.

She scanned every inch of the training field in search of Sebastian. She held her breath at the sight of Sir Robert standing, hands on hips, observing a tall, broad knight dressed in black. Long blond hair cascaded from his silver helm as he slipped his sword into the scabbard at his waist. Sebastian. She would recognize him anywhere, even covered in armor.

“Look, there is Sir Robert.” Lilly gathered her skirts and stepped delicately between the horse droppings and pools of mud.

Ann followed but fixed her attention on Sebastian. Her knight removed his helm, threw it to his squire, and began to wipe the sweat from his face and arms. He lifted his chin and his full lips curled up into a smile. Ann trembled. Tears stung the backs of her eyes and she stifled a sob.

Sir Robert headed in their direction, moving across the grass in long steps. Sebastian, hair damp from exertion, waited for his squire to collect a wine skin. He drank his fill before removing his sweat-soaked tunic. He balled up the garment to wipe the moisture from his muscled chest. Ann sucked in a breath and gaped at the sweep of his hand over taut muscled flesh.

The next moment a massive brown horse thundered up beside her and a fat gloved hand grasped her shoulder. She turned, horrified to discover Lord Bruin glaring down at her. His eyes, visible through the slit in his helm, reminded her of a ferocious wild boar. He bellowed so loud her knees weakened with shock.

“Why do you stand here staring lustfully at that shirtless knight. Are you a whore?”

Meg, her face ashen, rushed to her side and gripped her arm in support.

Ann shook her head firmly in denial. “I am a chaperone to the Lady Lilly for a falconry demonstration by the king’s request. As you may have noticed, when the knight removed his shirt, I moved some distance away and I averted my eyes. Your accusation is groundless, sir.”

Sir Robert strolled to her side with Lilly on his arm. He lifted his chin and glared at Lord Bruin. “I do believe congratulations are in order, Lord Bruin?” His eyes turned as cold as ice.

Ann stepped away from the horse and stood beside Lilly. Lord Bruin’s lip curled in disgust and he spit on the ground.
